The Health Board checked the water in Harku Lake on July 2. They found blue-green algae in the water. Blue-green algae can be harmful. Warm weather helps blue-green algae grow. Because of this, the Health Board says people should not swim in the lake.
If you swim, be careful. Look for warning flags on the beach. After swimming, wash your body with clean water and soap. Make sure children and pets do not swallow the water.
Blue-green algae can make people and animals sick. Symptoms include stomach pain, fever, and skin problems. If you feel sick, call a doctor or the number 16662.
Children and pets are at higher risk. For example, a dog can get sick if it licks its wet fur.
Before swimming, check the water. If the water looks green and smells bad, do not swim. If you see small flakes in the water, there may be blue-green algae.
